Umbilical Cord Care
After the umbilical cord is cut, the remaining portion ("belly button") will continue to dry. It will normally fall off in 5-10 days, and sometimes a little longer.
- Keep the cord dry and clear of any dirt or debris.
- When using diapers, arrange the cord above the diaper so it remains exposed to air. This prevents irritation by urine, and it also keeps it dry.
- If the cord gets wet during a bath, just pat it dry with a towel.
- When the cord falls-off, a small amount of bleeding at the site is normal.
