Water Births

Water birth is the process of giving birth which involves immersion in warm water. The theory behind water birth is that the baby has been surrounded by amniotic fluid during development and birthing into a similar environment is gentler for the baby and less stressful for the mother. Water births should take place under the supervision of your health care provider. If you are considering using this method of giving birth, please consult your physician or midwife.

Note: The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has not taken an official position on water birth.
